On 10-11 March 2020 the CAROTS project partners met in Tallinn in order to discuss next steps of the project’s implementation. Discussions revolved around first project results to be presented during the CAROTS Mid-Term Conference “Creating new markets: A disruptive approach to industrial research” scheduled on 15-16 September 2020 to take place in St. Petersburg hosted by Saint Petersburg State University of Economics.

Likewise, special attention was dedicated to the operational aspects of analyzing finances and business models of commercial research organisations, the available financial support programs for CROs and their potential in the material sciences market by way of in-depths interviews. This is a first and important step towards improving the conditions for the establishment and operation of further CROs.

The host of the meeting, the University of Tartu, cast a view onto the Estonian landscape of intermediary companies followed by a practical example: a presentation of R&D activities by the Center of Food and Fermentation Technologies by its Chief Innovation Officer Ene Viiard.
